Norovirus – What is it?

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has issued a notice informing communities of an increase of Norovirus cases. Resident health is a top priority; read below to learn how you can help in preventing the spread.

What is it?

The Norovirus (often referred to as the “stomach flu”) is a virus that causes gastroenteritis. This is inflammation of the stomach and the small and large intestines.

Common Symptoms:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal Cramps

Less Common Symptoms:

  • Low grade fever
  • Chills
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches

Duration of Illness:

Symptoms typically start anywhere from 24 – 48 hours after contracting the virus; symptoms can start before that as well.

Transmission:

Noroviruses are found in the stool or vomit of those infected and very contagious. Infected individuals shed the virus in their stool and vomit, which can then contaminate food, surfaces, and objects. The virus spreads to others when they consume or contact the contaminated items. Virus can be shed in the stool for several weeks after recovery.

So How Can We All Help With Prevention….?

Wash Your Hands!

Wash your hands with warm, soapy water for 20 seconds after using the bathroom, changing diapers, before preparing foods, and before eating.

Stay Hydrated & Call Your Doctor!

If you have symptoms be sure to drink plenty of fluids and wash your hands often! Do not prepare food for others, and contact your medical provider.
